Sometimes I can’t help but wonder, shouldn’t those people who are religious be more gracious and more forgiving of their surrounding.
This morning on the train, it was crowded as usual. It was thus inevitable that I was standing very close to the next person. The person was standing perpendicular to me and wanted to read her book, so she began incessantly tapping me with her book. Undeniably, I got irritated and tried to make whatever space I have for her to maneuver her book to her comfortable position.
At the next stops, more people came in but no one left the train, hence I had no choice but to move closer to her. This time, she used the same book to tap on my shoulders incessantly again. It didn’t feel like it was the result of the train jerking because it had been a smooth ride. She was leaning on that panel separating the seats so she couldn’t have been trying to balance herself. Logically, it was deliberately done. I had no choice but to bear with it until Dhoby Ghaut where the majority of the people got down.
Out of curiosity, I peeked at the book she was reading, which is now rested on my shoulders (what a disadvantage for being short). She was reading a chapter called Thursday and the contents involves verses taken from the Bible. Psalm something. Beneath it, it looked like an interpretation of that verse.
It than struck me at how she can be faithfully reading it yet her behaviour, I believe, is contrary to what would have been preached in the book. This is not the first time I and even my friends who share her religion, have a negative experience of those who share her religion and I can’t help but wonder why…
