iSalut!

I can’t quite recall when was the first time I had bought my first ipod but I can vividly recall when I was first introduced to apple. It started when my brother was completely sucked in by the wave in school where everyone had an ipod mini. That was the beginning of my journey with apple.

Somewhere along the way, my brothers were holding the ipod minis, ipod touches, I had the ipod classic that kept me company during my journeys across Europe. When my tech-friends ordered their first iphone and I’ve had an opportunity to play with it, I was completely consumed by it. It was the first one of a kind smart phone I’ve ever seen. Ipod with a wider screen, a phone and an Internet communication device all in one. Last night, after watching the keynote launching the iphone by Steve Jobs in 2007 for the first time, I actually teared. The crowd was in euphoria when he introduced the device. I now understand why a year after I laid my 2G iphone to rest. He was a phenomena. My first generation iphone actually lasted 3.5 years with me. Now its simply my alarm and pre-bedtime gaming device but still serving its purpose very well 5 year since its launch.

Just last year, I bought my first iMac after my brother bought his first laptop; needless to say a macbook. My worries of switching from a PC to a MAC were unfounded. It gets more user friendly by the day especially so after a frustrating day at work with the PC. There are very little bits of things that made the use of the computer so much easier for users. 6 months after, I got my first macbook. The only missing link is an ipad and whatever gadgets that will be in the pipeline without Steve Jobs.

Apple has become a form of lifestyle and an identity. The most unique part is that Steve Jobs wasn’t an inventor. He was simply a recreator. He made computer idiots like me enjoy each use of the computer. He made everything else from mp3s to phones pretty and user friendly. At the end of the day, one has to agree that everyone is attracted to aesthetic.

I wonder what will follow Apple from this day; I dread the day I have to abandon Apple. Lets hope I’ll never have to get to that.

His life has been more tumultuous than many of ours yet he shines amidst the dark clouds. From him I derive a lot of inspiration and motivation. Steve Jobs, I salute your brillance and it will be our huge lost without you.

“Star-studded” Night

Its been a while since I last left traces here. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to, it was because I didn’t know what to. I have been leading the mundane life, life cycle stays the same for the past days, weeks, months, my emotions remained quite the same.

I attended a friend’s engagement party, that drove emotions but when I was back to the real world when I got home I lost all emotions to actually note it all down here. Maybe I’m getting old and such feelings fade away so fast my fingers can’t enough close fast enough to let it stay in my hand.

It seemed like a while since I met up with the bestie even though on recollection I did meet her quite often of late. We met up for the launch of Topshop Topman Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection. I had received an invitation way back and asked if she wanted to come along if she didn’t have an invite. I wanted to go because it was an event that I always dream of going. I got a goodie bag for being the first 400 of which I only like the bag that contained the goodies.

Launch of TOPSHOP TOPMAN Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection

We both stood around for a while with the music blasting in the background and sipping on the cold drinks we were served. There was popcorn and ice-cream to fill the hungry stomach. After all it was dinner time. The seats lining the really short runway were reserved for the media. Before the show begin, we figured we couldn’t quite see anything from where we are and the heat and humidity was going to kill us (more so me) if we (more so I) didn’t leave so we went for dinner.

Friday Night Delight -- The Pantry Club

I do not know what went into my head when I chose sandwich for dinner. I should have started and ended with dessert! Damn! This sandwich picked was good but it would have been better for breakfast. Our dinner ended after the show ended so we didn’t head back. What I think was the highlight of the night was this…

My Dream, My Want, Mine...

It was what I have been looking for during the years in UK but faux fur only became an in-thing when I left UK. The call came on Wednesday to inform me that the item I was looking for had arrived and that what seems like the only piece of size 6 has been kept aside for me by my PS. Very nice. When the SA brought it out from the room, my breathe was taken away. It is now mine…

Drawn To Stripes

Lately, stripes drive me wild. Just after I noticed I didn’t own anything in stripes. Stripes that are not the usual black-white; red-black drives me crazy! I got one in vertical red and white stripes (note vertical), horizontal coral red and beige stripes… I can’t think further because I’m “blinded” in one eye!

Claudia Schiffer in stripes, definitely the hot issue this summer!

Rain Rain Go Away…

Its June! Summer should be here!

Instead, it is raining heavily outside coupled with thunder and lightning. I’m covered with my cardigan, blazer and 100% wool scarf yet I am still freezing right to my bones!

Where are the birds chirping, the flowers blooming and the colour and breezy clothes people wear to welcome summer?

Summer should like this this…

Now I crave to go to Bali looking like this…

Challenge Day 2

The meaning behind your wordpress name

This is something I’ve been meaning to do since I started this space. I just never got down to it because the mood never seems right. This will be one of the most meaningful entries for me because I didn’t quite think long and hard but when the name for this space came, it came and I immediately knew I had to use it. The first person I told was Juls because I was talking to her about moving. Her reaction was “it is so you!”. So there a new chapter has began…

My mom has a relatively good sense of dressing for her age. Looking at photos of her younger days, she was definitely one of the better dressed. She gets compliments for her dressing and when I wear the dresses she buys, I’ll get compliments too.

I once asked her “how did you get that kind of fashion sense?” Her reply was that I will learn what I will like and what suits my figure when I grow up through flipping through magazines.

From the magazines, I definitely did not. Being in UK did. I was soaked up in what High Street Fashion has to offer. Before I know it, I am actually dressed like I just walked out of Zara or Topshop’s catalogue but not without multiple fashion mistakes later.

I guess I am gutsy to dress queerly. Whilst growing up, I get many remarks from my friends who only told me recently that in the past, they’d want to keep a distance from me in the streets because of what I was wearing. I recalled Jo actually telling me that she can actually see me becoming well dressed in UK (that was the last time we met before I left for UK for the first time). She must have an eye than or she wouldn’t have succeeded in being a lady boss of 2 boutiques in Singapore.

So step by step, I am blown away by what the runway has to offer with Vogue being my holy bible to the fashion world.

Runway (the second meaning) is also a reflection of my love for travelling.

What better name to give than fusing both my love for travel and fashion? After all in this cosmopolitan world, our fashion influences take us to Europe, the US continent and even the other parts of the world. Literally or not.

AAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

My love for clutches began when I stepped into a quaint shop tucked in some corner of the little town I called home for an extensive period of time. It was one of a kind — a magazine. I love how it attracted attention of many guys who even bothered to gave compliments. Even my unfashionable uncle was not spared, if you recall from my CNY post.

Kate Spade began a book series clutch. The Great Gatsby attracted my attention whilst shopping one evening but I wasn’t a fan of the book. I thought other “books” might appear so I might as well wait.

The Great Gatsby

True to words Emma was released along with Great Expectations and Romeo & Juliet. I love all of Jane Austen’s literature but I prefer Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility. I am sure either of them will appear…

Emma

Surely they heard my inner call. Pride and Prejudice will be released as part of Kate Spade’s book series clutches.

Pride & Prejudice

Now I’m in a dilemma. I never liked Romeo & Juliet for the sad ending; I guess I still wish for that Cinderella ending till this day. But, the fonts and colors are screaming at me; it desperately want to belong to my extensive queer bag collection. Pride & Prejudice vs Romeo & Juliet. Hmmm…. Help!

Missing…

Courtesy Of The Satorialist

I was browsing through the Satorialist as usual hoping to find that burst of inspiration I need to give my dressing an extra omph! I scrolled down to see this picture and immediately it links me back to that afternoon in Vienna Austria. Juls and I were sipping our hot chocolate and cappuccino respectively and indulging in apple straudels when one guy came up to ask if he could take a picture of me, first smiling for the camera then pretending he didn’t exist whilst he snapped at me away,  because I was in a beret and he was doing a compilation of photos of people in hats…

I miss those slow saunters in unfamiliar places where we stand out rather obviously because of our skin colour consequently attracting non-stop greetings of “Ni Hao” (which I hate) and where the cold occasionally bites. I hope to do it again, and I hope to do it with Juls. You hear me?

Burlesque

Can’t quite recall where I saw the trailer that made me want to watch this movie, maybe I didn’t. It could just be the poster that attracted me. How it is symmetrical yet asymmetrical, and it is in the colour my brain is currently tuned to for detection of sophistication – black & white with a  tinge of pink (or any other colour in my dressing) to make the otherwise monotonous presentation stands out.

My initial plan was to get the Christina-Aguilera-crazy-Serena to go with me. I know she’d not reject but turns out, LI wanted to watch it too so I went along, yes on a Monday! We had our cheese hotdog (which I must say is quite good) whilst watching the film relieving the good ole secondary-after-school days.

In the film, Christina Aguilera’s vocal was impressive; something I had ignored because I was a Britney fan. Her dance steps made me want to ooze similar sex appeal if anyone is willing to teach. Not funny, I’m perfectly serious. And to top it up (like any other moral of the story) I made a silent promise to myself at the end of the film to strive for that intensity in my passion. With that I’m sure to be able to live my big dreams.

Meanwhile, I’m going to try find the soundtrack for this…

Cinderella’s Slippers

Since I started this space and renewed my faith in writing in public again, more anonymously this time, I had always planned on doing a weekly if not bi-weekly update on my shoe collection much to the support of Juls. I have been waiting for the right pair of shoes to begin the introduction to my shoe collection and the day has finally arrived. What better way to start the series than to unveil the Queen of Shoes (*hint: the little red soles)…

I’ve had a fetish for shoes since I took off for the UK. Less so before that because I often only have time for a meal and movie after school when still schooling in Singapore. Tbh, I never recalled even buying anything besides the birthday presents without my mom around. Financial restriction could be the main reason.

Studying in the UK where London is one of the fashion capital has opened my horizons to a more than gigantic collection of shoes from couture to designer to high street to low street (I made that last term up). I can’t exactly recall when that wish to be Imelda Marcos II, as my dad loves to call me, started to stem its way into my heart.

I do recall one occasion when I was trying a pair of odd looking shoes for fun at Topshop only to have my heart melting because of how good it looked after seeing them in my size and worse, on me. Even the SAs were gushing. I have small feet which I used to complain to my mom about because that kinda, in my most “wise” opinion, prevented me from growing any taller. I stopped grumbling and in fact am quite thankful I’ve small feet, am short and am relatively petite because in UK, no one fights with me for the only size 3 and sizes 6 or 8. Most importantly, the size 3 will never be on display; I must say that is good marketing strategy!

Also, just at the time I was studying in UK, ok maybe it happened before but I wasn’t fashion conscious than, there are loads of platform heels. I can afford those and not feel like I’m towering over the others. Love it.

So slowly as each semester went by, I got one pair, two pairs, three pairs, the record was five pairs during each of my shopping trips. My collection grew without my knowledge because I’d bring a few back home each time I return for Christmas or summer break until Jeremy commented one day when I was complaining about how I have been a year dry of shoes since last year “I think you have more shoes than that shop we just walked pass so stop complaining, you really can open a shop with the shoes you have”. I would have a smaller collection had Amy not been there to give me her most sacred advices and opinions to ignore Jeremy.

Back for a year, 2 months or maybe 3 now and shopping for shoes has never been the same. Topshop and River Island here do not stock the whole collection because it is not practical. Think: whole collection means they got to stock at least a pair in each size but that doesn’t mean they will sell off each pair. Shipment back to the UK would be another set of costs. Also, our weather do not permit certain types of shoes despite their very best effort to sell thigh high boots. Rather sorely lacking in that division, maybe I should get one to complete my collection.

Anyway I stumbled on ebay whilst in search for probably the coolest pair of shoes ever to be available, to add to my leather, suede, patent, canvas, wood and wool — collage.

Curious To Know What This Is?

Never heard right? Totally curious right? Before you girl shoe lovers jump at admiring the pictures and lose track of what I’m going to say, I’d like to express a big thank you to Natalie of Trenduet on ebay who put this pair of shoes on hold for me for more than 3 months because I have been trying to “raise funds” for it especially after I burnt a hole in my pockets trying to rush for the back to school offer to get my mac. She was extremely patient with my questions and is trustworthy based on this transaction I had with her. If you are curious to know what she has to offer here’s her link: http://myworld.ebay.com.sg/trenduet/.

Disclaimer: I am simply providing an avenue to those who online shop and are keen on getting those shoes which are very expensive here online at a cheaper rate and not acting as an agent of any sort. To get to know more, please contact the seller directly.

Now for the moment you have been waiting for… Drum rolls…
